Located on the left bank of the Paraguay River, Asunción is bordered to the north by Mariano Roque Alonso, to the east by Luque and Fernando de la Mora, and the south by Lambaré and Villa Elisa. The city is located in a hilly area crossed by numerous rivers.

Asunción is known as one of Latin America's hottest capitals. At the heart of a region of plains off the Río Paraguay, Asunción lies just 43 meters above sea level. This geographical location, far from the sea and on a flat area, explains its humid subtropical climate. As a result, Asunción experiences short, dry, mild winters and long, hot, humid summers. Rainfall is frequent between October and April. Humidity is present all year round. June is the driest month, ideal for travel.

The town of Asunción was founded on August 15, 1537, by Captain Don Juan de Salazar y Espinoza, who arrived in Asunción with Don Pedro de Mendoza, one of the first navigators of the Rio de la Plata.

The town's real name, “Nuestra Señora Santa María de la Asunción”, derives from this founding date, the day of the Virgin's ascension. During colonial times, Asunción was an important resupply point for navigators on the Rio de la Plata. It is known as the “Madre de Ciudades” (“Mother of Cities”) because many expeditions to found other cities in southern Latin America (Corrientes, Santa Fe, Concepción del Bermejo) took Asunción as their starting point.

Following Paraguay's independence in 1811, Gaspar Rodriguez de Francia, the country's governor at the time, had roads built throughout the city, thus initiating the development of the country's future capital.
