One of the main birding spots near Asunción, Arroyos y Esteros, is a great place to enjoy birds if you are in Asunción, and just have a half day or a full day to go for nature.
Its wetlands and grasslands are ecosystems that give opportunities to see many waterbirds, such as Limpkin, Wood and Maguari Storks, Jabiru, Brazilian Teal, White-faced and Black-bellied Whistling Ducks, and a good number of Egrets and Herons.
It's also home to many specialties of the wetlands, such as White-headed Marsh Tyrant, Scarlet-headed Blackbird, Long-tailed Reed Finch, and Black-capped Donacobius.
Arroyos & Esteros is also an IBA (Important Bird Area), as recognized by Guyra Paraguay (BirdLife International's partner).
Some of the bird species that make Arroyos & Esteros an important site for conservation are Bearded Tachuri, Stranded-tailed Tyrant, Marsh Seedeater, and Dark-throated Seedeater. Many of these bird species are usually found during the tour, as some of them are migratory species. It is also one of the best sites to find a recently described Seedeater, the Ibera Seedeater (Sporophila iberaensis).
