Oratorio “ Our Lady Of The Assumption ” And “ National Pantheon Of Heroes ”

Asunción, Paraguay

Located in the heart of downtown Asunción, the National Pantheon of Heroes and Oratory of Our Lady Saint Mary of the Assumption is one of Paraguay's most iconic monuments. It represents not only a site of great patriotic value but also an outstanding example of historical architecture that combines art, spirituality, and national memory.

This building is a must-see for tourists, foreign delegations, and citizens who want to learn more about the country's history. Its construction began in 1863, on the initiative of then-President Francisco Solano López, to turn it into a temple dedicated to the Virgin of Asunción.

However, due to the consequences of the War of the Triple Alliance, its completion was postponed until 1936. The design of the pantheon is inspired by the Palais des Invalides in France and bears a resemblance to Le Panthéon in Paris, reflecting the desire to elevate the site to the status of a national mausoleum. Inside lie the remains of key figures in Paraguayan history, such as Marshal Francisco Solano López, President Carlos Antonio López, Marshal José Félix Estigarribia and his wife Julia Miranda Cueto, the Martyr Children of Acosta Ñu, two Unknown Soldiers, among other national heroes.

In addition to its historical value, the site houses the chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary of Asunción, patron saint of the capital. Sunday masses are held there at 10:30 a.m., preserving the spiritual character of the site. The Pantheon opens its doors every day at 5:45 a.m., when the flag is raised, accompanied by the sounding of reveille.

The flag-lowering ceremony, accompanied by a bugle call, takes place at 5:00 p.m., except on Sundays, when the closing time is at noon. Today, the National Pantheon of Heroes is considered one of the main symbols of Paraguay. It not only honors the protagonists of its history but also constitutes a space for gathering, reflection, and national pride.
